The amount and frequency of alcohol consumption matter more than the brand or style of drink.

That does not mean every person who drinks will get cancer. It means reducing alcohol use reduces cancer risk.

Practical ways to reduce alcohol

For people who do not drink, there is no health reason to start drinking.

For people who do drink, reducing the number of drinks per week, choosing alcohol-free days, and replacing some alcoholic drinks with water, sparkling water, tea, coffee, or non-alcoholic alternatives can help lower risk.

Some people find it easier to set a simple rule, such as only drinking at special occasions or avoiding alcohol at home. Others prefer to track how much they drink each week. The best approach is the one that is realistic and sustainable.

Anyone who is worried about their alcohol use, experiences withdrawal symptoms, or finds it difficult to cut back should speak to a healthcare professional. Stopping suddenly can be unsafe for people with alcohol dependence.

What about sugar?

Sugar is one of the most common sources of cancer misinformation.

Cancer cells use glucose for energy, but so do healthy cells. Removing all sugar from the diet does not “starve” cancer cells, because the body can make glucose from other nutrients when necessary.

There is no good evidence that eating sugar directly causes cancer in the simplistic way social media posts often claim. A cookie, a birthday cake, or a sweet drink is not a direct cause of cancer.

What about dairy, soy, gluten, and coffee?

Soy foods, such as tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk, do not appear to increase breast cancer risk and may be part of a healthy diet. Gluten is a concern for people with coeliac disease or gluten-related disorders, but there is no reason for most people to avoid it solely out of fear of cancer.

Coffee has also been unfairly demonized in the past. For most people, moderate coffee consumption can fit into a healthy lifestyle. The details of a person’s health, sleep, anxiety, medication use, and caffeine tolerance still matter, of course.
