My Husband Became My Angel: August 29, 2003
“Still seems like yesterday.”
August 29, 2003, is a date that changed my life forever.
So many years have passed since that day, but sometimes it feels like yesterday. I can still remember the emotions, the emptiness, the questions, and the pain that entered my heart when I lost my husband. Time has continued moving forward, but grief has a way of reminding you that some moments never truly leave you.
My husband became my angel on August 29, 2003.
There are days when I wonder how it is possible that so much time has gone by. There have been birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, family gatherings, ordinary days, difficult days, and beautiful days. Life has continued, even though a part of my heart has remained with him.
I have learned that losing someone you love does not mean you stop loving them. It means you learn how to carry that love differently.
The Day Everything Changed
August 29, 2003, will always be a part of my story.
Before that day, I knew what it was like to have my husband here beside me. I knew the comfort of knowing he was there. I knew the sound of his voice, the memories we shared, and the simple things that made life feel familiar.
Then everything changed.
When someone you love passes away, there is no way to completely prepare your heart for the silence that follows. You can know that life is fragile, but knowing it and experiencing it are two completely different things.
The world does not stop.
The sun still rises.
People still go to work.
Children still laugh.
Cars still travel down the road.
The calendar still turns.
But inside your heart, everything can feel frozen.
That is what grief can do. It can make the world around you continue moving while you feel as though you are standing still.
For me, August 29, 2003, became more than a date on the calendar. It became the day my husband went from being beside me to becoming a memory I would carry forever.
Years Have Passed, But My Heart Remembers
People sometimes think that because many years have passed, the pain must disappear.
I have learned that grief doesn't work that way.
Time may teach you how to live with the loss, but it does not erase the love.
There are still moments when something reminds me of him. A song. A familiar place. A memory. A certain time of year. A conversation. Sometimes a simple thought can bring everything rushing back.
And suddenly, August 29, 2003, doesn't feel like it was so long ago.
It feels like yesterday.
That is one of the strange things about losing someone you deeply love. Years can pass, but memories can remain incredibly close.
I don't believe that remembering him means I am stuck in the past. I believe it means that he mattered.
He mattered to my life.
He mattered to my heart.
He mattered to the person I became.
And he still matters today.
I Ask God Every Day to Help Me Get Through the Day
There have been days when I didn't know how I was going to keep going.
There have been mornings when getting out of bed felt difficult. There have been nights when memories became especially heavy. There have been moments when I wished I could go back in time, even for just a little while, to hear his voice or feel the comfort of knowing he was still here.
During those moments, I have turned to God.
I ask God every day to help me get through the day.
Sometimes my prayer is long.
Sometimes it is only a few words.
Sometimes I have so many questions that I don't know what to say.
And sometimes all I can say is, “Lord, please help me.”
But I have learned that God doesn't need a perfect prayer.
He knows my heart.
He knows my pain.
He knows my tears.
He knows the memories I carry.
He knows the questions I don't have answers for.
And He knows the strength I need for each new day.
When I feel like I cannot take another step, I ask God to give me strength for that step.
Not tomorrow.
Not next year.
Just today.
One day at a time.
My Faith Has Carried Me
My faith does not mean I never hurt.
My faith means I don't have to walk through the hurt alone.
There is a difference.
Grieving does not mean that I have forgotten God's promises. Crying does not mean that I have lost my faith. Missing my husband does not mean that I don't trust God.
Sometimes faith looks like tears.
Sometimes faith looks like getting out of bed when your heart feels heavy.
Sometimes faith looks like whispering a prayer when you don't have the strength to speak.
Sometimes faith is simply saying, “God, I need You.”
And I have needed Him.
Through the years, God has helped me survive days I once thought I could never face.
He has given me strength when I felt weak.
He has given me comfort when I felt alone.
He has reminded me that my life still has meaning, even after tremendous loss.
I don't pretend that I understand everything that happened. There are questions that may never have answers on this side of heaven.
But I have learned that I can trust God even when I don't understand His plan.
Love Doesn't End at Goodbye
When my husband became my angel, I lost his physical presence.
But I did not lose the love we shared.
Love is powerful like that.
It stays.
It becomes part of your memories.
It becomes part of your story.
It becomes part of who you are.
There are memories I will always treasure. Some memories make me smile. Others bring tears. Some do both at the same time.
That is okay.
I have learned not to be ashamed of my tears.
Tears are sometimes love with nowhere else to go.
When I cry for my husband, I am not ashamed. I am remembering someone who meant so much to me.
I am remembering a life that mattered.
I am remembering love.
Learning to Live With an Empty Space
After losing someone you love, you notice the empty spaces.
You notice the chair that is no longer occupied.
You notice the voice that is no longer heard.
You notice the person who is missing from special occasions.
You notice the empty side of the bed.
You notice the silence.
And sometimes the smallest things can hurt the most.
Grief can appear unexpectedly.
You can be having a perfectly ordinary day when a memory suddenly appears. For a moment, you may feel as though you have been transported back to another time.
But slowly, I have learned to breathe through those moments.
I have learned to let myself remember.
I have learned that I don't have to run away from the memories.
I can hold them close.
I can thank God for the time I was blessed to have with my husband.
And then I can ask God for the strength to continue.
There Is Still a Tomorrow
One of the hardest lessons after losing someone is realizing that life continues.
At first, continuing can feel almost wrong.
How can you laugh again?
How can you celebrate?
How can you enjoy life when someone you love is no longer here?
But I have come to understand that continuing to live does not mean leaving my husband behind.
It means carrying his memory with me as I move forward.
I believe that God still has purpose for my life.
There are still people I can love.
There are still lives I can touch.
There are still prayers I can pray.
There are still mornings I can wake up and be grateful for.
There are still sunsets to watch.
There are still memories to make.
And there are still reasons to say thank You, God.
Moving forward does not mean forgetting.
It means honoring what was while accepting what is.
August 29 Will Always Be Special
Every year when August 29 comes around, I remember.
I remember the love.
I remember the loss.
I remember the life we shared.
I remember how much my world changed.
But I also remember how God brought me through another year.
That is something worth recognizing.
For every anniversary of his passing, there is also another testimony of God's faithfulness.
I am still here.
I made it through another year.
I made it through the tears.
I made it through the difficult days.
I made it through the moments when I wondered how I could possibly continue.
And I know it wasn't always because I was strong.
Sometimes it was because God carried me when I couldn't carry myself.
God, Help Me Get Through Today
My prayer has become simple.
“God, help me get through the day.”
I don't always ask for an easy day.
I ask for strength.
I ask for peace.
I ask for comfort.
I ask God to help me keep my heart open to life.
I ask Him to help me remember the good without being overwhelmed by the loss.
I ask Him to help me understand that it is okay to grieve and still have joy.
It is okay to miss my husband and still smile.
It is okay to cry and still have faith.
It is okay to remember yesterday while still living today.
And when I don't know what else to say, I simply pray:
God, please help me get through this day.
My Husband Became My Angel
I will always miss my husband.
That is something I have learned not to fight.
I don't have to pretend that I am not hurting.
I don't have to pretend that August 29 is just another day.
It isn't.
It is the day my life changed.
It is the day I lost someone I loved.
But it is also part of the story God has helped me survive.
When I say, “My husband became my angel,” I am remembering him with love.
I am acknowledging the enormous place he still holds in my heart.
I am honoring the life we shared.
And I am reminding myself that love does not simply disappear because someone is no longer physically present.
To Anyone Who Is Grieving
If you are reading this and you have lost someone you love, I want you to know something:
You are allowed to grieve.
You are allowed to miss them.
You are allowed to have good days and bad days.
You are allowed to laugh without feeling guilty.
You are allowed to cry.
You are allowed to remember.
You are allowed to take your time.
There is no perfect schedule for grief.
Someone else's timeline does not have to be yours.
Don't let anyone tell you that you should be “over it” simply because time has passed.
Some losses change us forever.
But changed does not mean broken.
You can learn to live again.
You can find moments of peace again.
You can smile again.
And with God's help, you can discover that your story is not over.
My Prayer
Today, I thank God for the years I had with my husband.
I thank Him for the memories.
I thank Him for the love.
I thank Him for every moment that I was blessed to share with him.
I also thank God for carrying me through the years since August 29, 2003.
There were times when I didn't think I could make it.
But I did.
Not because every day was easy.
Not because I stopped missing him.
Not because the pain completely disappeared.
I made it because God gave me enough strength for each day.
And I believe He will continue to do the same.
So when tomorrow comes, I will ask Him again.
When the anniversary comes, I will remember again.
When the tears come, I will let them fall.
And when I feel weak, I will turn back to God.
Because He has been my strength.
He has been my comfort.
He has been my refuge.
And He is the One I continue to lean on.
Still Seems Like Yesterday
August 29, 2003, still seems like yesterday.
So many years have passed, yet my heart remembers.
I remember my husband.
I remember our life.
I remember the love.
And I remember the moment everything changed.
But I also remember that God has been with me through every chapter since then.
He has seen every tear.
He has heard every prayer.
He has carried me through every difficult day.
And He has given me another morning every time I thought I couldn't face another one.
My husband became my angel, but God remained by my side.
That is the truth I hold onto.
I cannot change August 29, 2003.
I cannot turn back the clock.
I cannot bring yesterday back.
But I can honor his memory by continuing to live.
I can carry the love in my heart.
I can share my testimony.
I can encourage someone else who is hurting.
And I can keep trusting God.
One day at a time.
One prayer at a time.
One breath at a time.
When the road feels difficult, I will say:
“God, help me get through the day.”
And when I reach the end of the day, I will say:
“Thank You, God, for carrying me through.”
My husband became my angel on August 29, 2003.
He will always be remembered.
He will always be loved.
And he will always have a place in my heart.
As for me, I will keep walking forward with God, trusting Him to give me the strength I need for every new day.
God, help me get through the day.
In Jesus' name, Amen. 🙏❤️
