Arrest Warrant Issued For Stein After No-Show Over Alleged Assault on Cop
The warrant was later withdrawn the same day after her attorney finally showed up, but the case remains active with a clear warning: miss the next hearing and another warrant will be issued.
Stein, 76, the Green Party nominee in 2012, 2016, and 2024, faces one count of first-degree trespassing and one count of fourth-degree assault.
The charges arise from an April 27, 2024, demonstration where protesters marched onto the university’s Danforth Campus, set up tents, and locked arms while shouting “Hold the line” after police issued dispersal warnings.
More than 100 people were arrested that day as officers moved in to clear the unregistered encampment.According to court documents and police accounts, Stein allegedly grabbed an approaching officer’s bicycle, causing it to strike a second officer—identified as Officer Moore—in the forearm.
While Moore held the bike aloft, Stein is accused of kicking him multiple times in the right leg near the groin.
The officer later sought medical treatment and was diagnosed with a strained left forearm and leg, plus testicular contusions.
Stein’s campaign manager and deputy were also among those arrested.
St. Louis Associate Circuit Judge Karma Johnson issued the failure-to-appear warrant after neither Stein nor her attorney, Joseph Welch, appeared for the scheduled 9 a.m. hearing.
The court order had explicitly required all parties and counsel to appear in person.
Prosecutors were present and noted they were not requesting a warrant, but Johnson proceeded anyway, ordering Stein arrested and held without bond. “There will be a failure to appear warrant for Ms. Stein,” the judge stated from the bench.
Hours later, Welch appeared and moved to quash the warrant.
Judge Johnson granted the request, withdrew the order, and continued the case to September 14.
The new filing carries a stark note: “Warrant to issue if Defendant fails to appear.” Stein must appear in person.
St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith previously emphasized that the charges are not about free speech or the substance of the protest over the situation in Gaza.
“These misdemeanor criminal charges are not a statement about the freedoms of speech or assembly, which we honor and uphold as part of our Constitution,” she said when the charges were filed.
“They are not a statement about the subject of the protest… These charges merely reflect our professional judgment that we have the evidence to prove these particular criminal charges beyond a reasonable doubt,” she added.
Only Stein and one other individual ultimately faced formal charges from the mass arrests.
Stein has long positioned herself as a radical “eco-socialist” voice, repeatedly labeling Israel’s defensive actions in Gaza as “genocide” and aligning with far-left causes that frequently spill into campus disorder and confrontations with law enforcement Her 2016 presidential run drew lasting criticism from Democrats who blamed her for siphoning votes in key states.
In 2024, she again courted the progressive left with hardline anti-Israel rhetoric.
Yet when it comes to answering for alleged violence against a police officer—kicks to the groin area while officers tried to restore order on a college campus—Stein initially treated the court date as optional.
That it was quickly withdrawn after the lawyer’s belated appearance does not erase the initial disregard for the court’s authority.
The next hearing is set for September 14 in St. Louis.
If she fails to appear, Judge Johnson has already signaled that another arrest warrant will follow.
